Tomasz Gornicki "On the edge of shadow"

Remember that amazing collaboration with Chazme a year ago or “Blinkofaneye”, a pretty fascinating piece created last September? Well, Polish sculptor Tomasz Gornicki is back with yet another brilliant and haunting urban installation.

Titled “On the edge of shadow”, the new piece irradiate a deep feeling of melancholia and loneliness. According to Gornicki, shadows serve both as a place where we, consciously or unconsciously leave behind people and their suffering, a suffering we don’t want to see, and as a refuge where we can hide. The artist describes the idea of the shadow as “[A] place of sorrow, harm, wrongdoing, a cursed space at which edge we find a borderline between what is normal and what has been relegated.”

Gornicki describes his character as an urban pigeon, a homeless, an immigrant and even as a lonely saint. The human like figure sits on the ground under a bridge, naked, with his/her hands entwined around his legs while he/she timidly gazes at the busy crowd in the street over. Loneliness and isolation are to be felt. The creature is here, right beside us, but for some reason it remains invisible for us. We look at it, but we don’t really want to see it.

As expressed by the artist, it is a matter of choice to care or not for the pain of others, to notice this creature, either if it is another person or just the darkness within ourselves. It is only then, when we become aware of its presence, that the perception of what lies beyond the edge of shadows changes.

“On the edge of shadow” appears as a highly introspective piece that invites to reflection and contemplation. It opens our eyes to what is around us, and within ourselves. oh sweet sour melancholia, I think I am in love.
