Elbi Elem, previously known as Labuenaylamala, is back, not only under a new name, but also with an amazing new project titled ‘Silence’, a kinetic sculpture that follows Elbi Elem’s obsession with movement and balance, and where an interplay of curves, lines and planes create a dynamic sculpture characterised by both linear and volumetric 3D and 2D shapes.
According to Elbi Elem, this project had been in her mind for a long time. The idea was to create a visual work, an indefinite vision in constant movement starting from a real sculpture of great size suspended in the air and using the sculpture’s own projection to create a connection with the original piece.
Despite its complexity, the piece was created using a rather simple method that, as described by the artist, is the result of the recording a video of the sculpture rotating in front of a white background, and then projecting it back onto the original piece, generating shadows that give shape to a superposition of layers that create a hypnotic effect and an infinite abstract landscape of moving architecture.
The title of the piece makes also reference to the location; an abandoned space that evokes feelings of melancholy, darkness, dirt, emptiness and silence.
“Filled with memories, extinguished today by the passing of time, by that silence, which breaks for a moment with this projection of light, on a floating piece, that moves and creates new forms in the nothing, in the everything, in all what a day was that place.”
“Silence” was made of different materials such as metal, wood, pvc, methacrylate and carbon fiber, and measures 320x160x100cm. Simply haunting.

Earlier known as “Labuenaylamala”, I live and work in Barcelona. I started making kinetic sculpture in 2002. Abstract nature, with a clear interest in the movement and composition of forms in space, volume is very important in my work. My aim is to find balance in everything; I combine study work with urban art interventions, where I started 7 years ago.
Along with the variety of materials used, architecture, urban landscapes and street textures are a source of inspiration. With my work I express myself and try to interpret in my own way how I see my inner world. The latest works continue in the search and mixing of sculpture with painting in murals and 3D-dimensional installations creating visual effects by their own projection or point of view, using video and projection as a tool to elevate the work itself, unfolding it an using it as one’s own mirror where look inside and evolve, transform in an infinite way.
