Ukrainian street artist Dima Fatum was one of the participating artists of this year’s ArtUnitedUs project that recently closed its 2016 season with the amazing participation of Guido van Helten just a few days ago (here).
The new mural, organised by ArtUnitedUS and curated by Geo Leros and Iryna Kanishcheva, represents a surreal depiction of the historical and contemporary context of the Kharkov neighbourhood, Ukraine’s second largest city. The composition is filled with a variety of Ukrainian traditional characters, each of which illustrates the area.
Among others we find the face of Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet, writer, artist, public and political figure, as well as folklorist and ethnographer. Shevchenko is also known for many masterpieces as a painter and an illustrator. We also find petroglyphs and a series of creatures, including trees that seem to look like Boyars, members of the highest rank of the feudal Bulgarian, Moscovian, Ruthenian (Ukraine and Belarus), Wallachian, and Moldavian aristocracies. The result is a colourful, and interesting fairytale that invites us to reflect on its meaning and relevance.
