A few weeks ago Greek artist iNO was in Cyprus where he among other things painted this symbolic mural at the heart of the Cypriot Parliament.
Titled “Ignorance is Bliss”, the new mural is the first large-scale mural in the world painted inside a parliament building, specially when it is one that criticise corrupt politicians.
iNO was invited by the research & publication department of the parliament of Cyprus to create something on their building. He came up with some ideas that were censored, but finally his last proposal was approved probably because they didn’t really understand the symbolism behind the artwork.
According to iNO the mural depicts Solon & Pericles, two of the most important representatives of “democracy”, the political system that was born in Greece. Their eyes are covered with paint so they cannot see how their ideas are used by some governments to serve specific interests. Well, I guess they know now!
