Portuguese graphic designer and illustrator Diogo Machado, also known as Add Fuel has in recent years been building a solid reputation in the Street Art world thanks to his unique style.Now in Perth, Australia for the Public 2016 festival he created a series of murals in the last couple of weeks. One of them is ‘Upwards Descent’ where he once again reinterprets and inserts the traditional Portuguese azulejo in his work with a twist, that is, depicting animals that are characteristic for the region, such as marsupials, snakes, spiders and the quokka.
The choice of the Portuguese tile as his main subject has to do, not only with a desire to identify himself as Portuguese, but also to reflect about the significance of tradition, what it means for us and how we can preserve it in a fast paced and technologically advanced modern world.
The work isn’t just a stunning sight from a distance, but it is only when you get to appreciate the details that the real journey begins.
