Working with a wide array of materials, everything from photos, string, sewing, paint, wood paper, time, mirrors, light and space, Oakland based artist Chris Duncan mines questions of optics, geometric abstraction, colour theory, and dynamic patterning, along with a variety of materials to ponder ideas such as perception and balance, in both conceptual and physical forms. His work is about seeing, it makes us question the objectivity of what we see, both literally and metaphorically. This is the case of the works presented at T.T.I.T.T.T.T.T. (“The Time It Takes To Take The Time”), Duncan’s new solo exhibition at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, with a body of work based on the concept of the passing of time and long-term effects of sun exposure to fabric.
‘”The Time It Takes To Take The Time” is a collection of works made in the artists’ bedroom windows, warehouse skylights and architectural elements on rooftops in Oakland, California. Manufactured colored fabric is placed in these locales and without the use of dye, emulsion or any purposefully manipulated chemical process, imagery emerges through time (4 -12 months) and ultraviolet exposure. At once an homage to the power of the sun, the works also provide a haunting intimacy and an effect that blurs the conversations of painting and photography. With society being neck-deep in the information age and reliant (if not addicted) to the immediacy of social media, the concept of time takes precedence. The works in T.T.I.T.T.T.T.T. become mile markers and are made by honouring the passing of time, not the acceleration of it.’
There is no space for quick fixes in Duncan’s work, instead memories are slowly embodied through time and space, imprints of the real world and moments that seem to last forever. Amazing work.
