886 Geary Gallery announced a few days ago the opening of Future Communication, a solo exhibition with West Rubinstein on October 10th next week.
Coming from a graffiti background West Rubinstein’s finds its inspiration in both graffiti, commercial advertising and street signage. Future Communication is the result of an interesting internalisation of this visual language expressed through a beautiful series of abstract paintings and sculptures.

His new series Future Communication, which includes a variety of paintings, sculpture, and paper works is an effort to deconstruct this history of elaborate symbol making into simple, less precise and more essential forms that prehistoric man himself may have discovered in an effort to communicate. These new works evoke Parietal art, West African art, the Totems poles of North America and the Graffiti of his youth. West both utilizes and disposes of those histories and familiar iconographies to make way for a new type of communiqué. They are neither familiar nor unfamiliar but within them lay a definitive and assertive language that is being formed which touches and speaks to our collective subconscious. – Carlos Mare
“I wanted to connect my work back to the fundamental idea of communication, particularly hidden or coded communication in the broader narrative of human culture through the ages. I looked at cave paintings, hieroglyphics, totems, gang hand signs, smoke signals, and lots of other coded forms of communication. I started to create a new language in this tradition. “
The opening reception will be Saturday, October 10th, from 7-11 pm, the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through October 31st, 2015.
