Shadows is American artist and designer Matt W. Moore latest project product of a two-month stay in Oakland, CA, and a two-week residency within 886 Geary Gallery and for which he created a completely new body of work.
The exhibition consists of both an installation (images below) and a series of greyscale cut-paper mosaics created in Montreal in Fall 2014 here displayed as evidence of the explorations that led to the more elaborate colourful works created during this Bay Area residency and where the artist “fuses his bold, graphic, op-geo vocabulary with extruded mosaic forms that bring the works to life in three dimensions.” The result is a series of interesting pieces that change according to both the intensity of the light and the angle from which they are viewed from, in this way the viewer become a participant, not just a spectator of the work.
The image below reveals a large in-situ installation created for the occasion on the back two walls of the 886 Geary Gallery that follow the same structural logic of the rest of the series. A beautiful example of the artist’s ability to overlap different techniques, objectives, and aesthetics.
Shadows is free and open to the public for viewing through September 5th at the gallery located on 886 Geary st. San Francisco, CA.
