It’s official! Banksy is back with a new, very unusual, but also very Banksy project, Dismaland a utopian theme park, according to the artist a “family theme park unsuitable for children”.
The website, which went live this morning before apparently crashing (still not working properly), says the park includes a Cinderella’s castle, a model village and a cinema, which sit among a fire pit that burns novels by “famed local perjurer” Jeffrey Archer, a Jimmy Saville-inspired Punch & Judy performance, and even a pool full of small boats carrying migrants.
Dismaland and the pop-up exhibition occupies a derelict seafront lido in Weston-super-Mare, UK and will feature bizarre and macabre artworks from 50 artists from around the world including Damien Hirst, Axel Void, Paul Insect & Bäst, Escif, Polly Morgan, Josh Keyes, David Shrigley, Espo, Nettie Wakefield, and of course Banksy himself who will be showing 10 new artworks at the show.
Until recently, the show was kept as a secret and according to The Guardian only four people at the local council knew about it. Dismaland, which opens to the public on Saturday is Banksy’s first “bemusement park” and will be packed full of subversive artworks and traditional funfair attractions, which have been given a satirical twist. This really sounds like something I personally would enjoy!
