Evoca1 and Jade were recently in Mexico where they painted this new and surrealistic mural for the Constructo festival showing the image of the fallen sculpture of the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés under the water surrounded by a serpent, a representation of the mythical Quetzalcoatl taking its prey down into the deep. The mural has been described by the artists as follows and has a special meaning for many:
“While researching the history of Mexico city for our collaboration, we came across a statue of Hernán Cortés, a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire. The statue showed Cortés stepping on the head of an indigenous man. This is an attempt at depicting the reconquering of Quetzalcoatl, as it drags the sculpture under the waters that Mexico city was built on.”
