“OFF/GRID” is Augustine Kofie‘s latest solo exhibition at David Bloch Gallery and the product of a month-long artist residency in Marrakesh.
The artist made the best of his time in the city by creating a couple of mural interventions as well as working with local craftsman on a new series of work inspired and influenced by local traditions, giving form to ‘OFF/GRID’.
OFF/GRID refers to the tension that gives shape to his work: the juxtaposition and synthesis of opposing forces operating at a number of levels where the vintage and the futurist collide.
Kofie’s work, mainly based on a collage technique using industrial packaging and office supply materials from the 1950s to the 1980s, consists of shapes and lines that seem to be superimposed in what we could call, a controlled way, but still giving room to improvisation and experimentation.
In a constant quest for balance, creates Kofie futuristic compositions in wonderful vintage toned palettes, giving form to “organically complex formations through meticulously structured line-work and layering” certainly an interesting constructivist approach to art.
OFF/GRID has to do with the temporality of Kofie’s work producing a paradoxical sense of time: the structure simultaneously exists in a future that will never take place, while referring back to a past that has been forgotten based on preliminary, two-dimensional sketches of structures that will never be built.
OFF/GRID will run until April 26 at the gallery located on Rue des Vieux Marrakechis, Marrakech, Morocco.
