Italian artist Basik is now on his way back to Italy, but before he left Gdynia he painted this beautiful mural for this year’s Traffic Design Festival.
There is no doubt that Basik’s style is something different. His pieces are simple, balanced and visually powerful where his hands have become his signature imagery adding a cryptic symbolism to his work that captures our attention.
According to Basik, hands can be as expressive as a face, “wrinkles and nodes of a hand can tell stories and be intense like a grimace on a face”. Basik defines his work as follows:
“I found human and animal bodies, especially hands and weird face expressions, very captivating. I started a research about lines, shapes and solid aspects of the colours. Subjects painted are often idealized and slightly surreal. Strokes become bones, while paint’s matter turns into flesh.
I love to make my works on useless and broken items. Painting becomes more intense and dramatic whilst the support gets a whole new dimension and dignity.”
