Jef Aerosol was recently in Bordeaux where he painted this new mural at the Bordeaux University Hospital.
Painted “live” in the course of three days from 9 to 11 October, the new mural shows the image of a little girl drinking with the world in her hands.
The new piece, entitled “This world is your world”, was organized as part of the NON TOXIC REVOLUTION program initiated by the Keep a Breast Association on the occasion of Pink October , awareness month breast cancer screening . The piece is based on a photo I had taken in Chengdu, China, during his stay back in 2009.
The artist explains that he wanted to created a positive image which could softens that feeling of anxiety prevailing at the hospital. In his own words:
« Il ne s’agissait pas d’illustrer la question du cancer du sein, mais d’imaginer une image positive, pour ‘casser l’ambiance’ souvent anxiogène qui règne à l’hôpital où, hélas, on vient rarement quand tout va bien ! J’ai compris qu’il me fallait créer une image universelle et atemporelle, sans message explicite, mais qui interroge cependant.
J’ai donc travaillé à partir d’une photo que j’avais prise à Chengdu, en Chine, lors de mon séjour en 2009. J’étais invité à peindre un grand mur sur le site du Zebra Festival, en soutien aux victimes du séisme qui secoua le Sichuan en 2008. J’ai croisé cette petite chinoise qui buvait à la paille dans une grosse noix de coco et l’ai immortalisée.
C’est cette image que j’ai reprise ici au CHU de Bordeaux pour ce mur de 15m de hauteur. Pourquoi cette petite fille ? Parce que l’enfance, c’est l’innocence, l’avenir, l’espoir. La jeunesse, c’est à la fois le futur et aussi ce que nous laissons derrière nous… Et puis, cette enfant est asiatique, c’est un petit clin d’œil en ces temps où les questions de “diversité” font couler tant d’encre.
La Terre, qu’elle tient entre ses mains, c’est nous ! Elle nous dit : “Ce monde, c’est votre monde. A vous de savoir ce que vous voulez en faire… Et à nous, la génération-relève, de décider aussi de notre devenir…” Jef Aérosol
The new mural is 15m x 6m and can be found at the entrance of Groupe hospitalier Pellegrin.
